Before you compare two kettles or decide on a phone charger, it helps to know what we do and do not claim. This page sets out the ground rules behind every review so you can weigh the findings against your own situation.
We do not run lab-style benchmarks. Every product is used in a normal household setting for at least three weeks before we write a word. That means daily boils, regular charging cycles, and drawers opened and closed dozens of times. If an item only fails after a month of heavy use, we wait until it fails.
Our ratings reflect value for a typical South African household, not absolute performance. A kettle that boils fast but has a short cord can still rate well if the price is right. We weigh durability, ease of cleaning, noise, and whether the sizing matches the listing. A high rating means we would buy it again with our own money.
This is always a judgement call based on what the item costs versus what it does over time. We do not factor in sale prices or one-off discounts. If a product only makes sense at a reduced price, we say so plainly. We also note when a cheaper alternative does the same job well enough.
We do not measure electrical safety in a lab, and we cannot predict how a product will behave after two years of use. Our reviews are based on the unit we received and the conditions in our own kitchen or home office. If a manufacturer changes the design or materials later, the review may no longer apply.
If we receive a product at no cost, it is disclosed in the review. Receiving a free unit does not change the verdict. We keep the same testing routine and the same plain-spoken tone. If a product is genuinely poor, we say so even when the manufacturer sent it to us.
We deliberately limit the range of products we cover. This lets us compare similar items side by side without stretching our experience too thin. If a category is not listed on the site, it means we have not tested enough units to give you a fair comparison yet.
Sometimes a review leaves you with one more question, or you want to know whether a gadget fits your particular setup. We answer those directly, without redirecting you to a chatbot or a generic help page.
Send us the product name and the specific thing you are unsure about, like whether the kettle cord reaches a standard counter outlet or how noisy a blender gets on high. We reply with what we found in our own testing.
If you prefer talking it through, phone us between 9am and 5pm on weekdays. We can walk you through the pros and cons of two similar items side by side, the way we would for a neighbour.
Emails get a response within one working day. Phone calls are answered immediately during office hours, and if we miss you, we return the call the same day. We do not leave you hanging for a week.

How a review comes together
Every product we cover goes through the same routine. We buy it, live with it, and only then write about it. Here is the path from unboxing to the published review, so you know exactly what you are reading.
Week 1
We purchase the item at full price from a regular retailer, no press samples. The first check is simple: does the packaging match the listing, and does the product look like the photos?
Weeks 2–4
The product goes into normal rotation. We note how loud it runs, whether the sizing matches the listing, and how easy it is to clean after repeated use. No lab conditions, just everyday life.
Week 5
We write the review with the flaws included. If the cord is too short or the tray is too narrow for large spoons, you will read about it. The rating reflects whether it is worth the money for a typical South African household.
We do not accept sponsored praise or rewrite press releases. Products that fail after a few weeks get a low score, and we say why. If an item is only good for one specific use case, we tell you that too, so you can decide if it fits your kitchen or your budget.
